Marti Cherry joined the Houston office of Fulbright & Jaworski L.L.P. in 2008 and recently transferred to fhe firm's Dallas office.
As a litigation attorney in Fulbright's international section, Marti represents foreign and domestic clients in federal and state court and international arbitration. Her practice focuses on complex commercial contract disputes in the energy industry for upstream, energy-services, and manufacturing clients.
Marti has represented clients in state and federal court and volunteered for five months as a city prosecutor, trying cases in municipal court.
An active participant in the energy community, Marti chairs the Women's Energy Network's Mentor Program with more than 125 participants, piloting a 2011 Corporate Partner Program that provides mentoring services for mid- to senior-level executive women at BP and Mustang Engineering.
From 2006 to 2008, Marti clerked for the Honorable Judge David Hittner in the United States District for the Southern District of Texas. Prior to law school, she worked in the energy industry in a family-owned business that located a merger candidate for Helmerich and Payne's E&P division in Tulsa, Oklahoma. A successful merger resulted in the formation of Cimarex.
- Assisted in the representation of a Japanese chemical company in federal court winning dismissal of all claims
- Assisted in the representation of an international upstream oil and gas company's claims against a foreign government regarding offshore oil and gas lease
- Advised foreign exploration and production company regarding its participation agreement in offshore leases located in the Gulf of Mexico
- Advised international manufacturing client regarding liability for allegedly defective goods that client supplied to operator for construction of a floating, production, storage and offloading facility in the Gulf of Mexico under Texas or Louisiana Oilfield Indemnity Act and/or the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act
- Conducted internal investigation of European commodities company's import / export compliance in global trade operations
- Advised Finnish client regarding application of the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC), Convention on International Sale of Goods (CISG), and products liability law to potential dispute regarding manufacture and supply of allegedly non-conforming steel
- Participated in two-week state court trial and mediation of partnership dispute regarding international hotel
- Successfully defended tenant in commercial property lease dispute
- First-chaired multiple jury trials as a volunteer prosecutor in municipal court
