EXPERIENCE

Tony Patterson is the partner-in-charge of the Health Law Section of the Dallas office of Fulbright & Jaworski L.L.P., a renowned law firm with over 1,000 attorneys, ten offices in the United States and six international offices.

Tony has over thirty years of legal experience in a broad range of business transactions, including representing corporate businesses (especially non-profit, tax-exempt and proprietary health care services provider organizations) and clients in real estate, joint venture and contractual arrangement transactions.

His practice focuses on the healthcare services industry, in which he has been involved in the formation of integrated health care provider systems; reorganizations, acquisitions and divestitures of healthcare facilities; advising Boards of Directors/Trustees on fiduciary duties and regulatory compliance; advice and documentation related to managed care; transactions with and on behalf of physicians and physician groups; advice on working within the current regulatory environment, including the federal Medicare anti-fraud and abuse and Texas anti-patient solicitation laws, the “Stark law”; hospital-physician arrangements, such as service line co-management arrangements, physician recruiting, hospital based physician contracts and “purchased under arrangements” transactions; advice on state and federal tax laws applied to tax exempt facilities; joint venture transactions in the United States and internationally; peer review and medical staff relations; representation of long-term care facilities, ambulatory surgery facilities and other ancillary services providers; and all facets of operating issues for healthcare providers.

Tony also has experience in the representation of lenders and borrowers in real estate lending transactions, including mortgage lending on commercial and residential projects, loans to hospitals and other entities for projects such as physician office buildings, assisted living communities, nursing homes, ambulatory surgery and other outpatient services facilities.

As an undergraduate, Tony served as student government vice-president and was chosen as the Outstanding Senior Man.  While in law school, he was an editor of the Southwestern Law Journal and was elected to the Order of the Coif. He was admitted to practice law in Texas in 1973.

INTERESTS

In his spare time, Tony enjoys road biking and exercising, two activities that keep him prepared for snow skiing, hiking and fly fishing excursions. He also enjoys catching up with his children and grandchildren on the slopes, especially on those days he considers perfect: 24 degrees, no wind, crisp and clear.
