AREAS OF CONCENTRATION
EXPERIENCE

As a Professional Support Lawyer ("PSL") in the disputes practice, Ian uses his background as a qualified disputes lawyer and as an experienced PSL to support the London fee-earners. This support comprises the collation and dissemination of legal and business knowledge, research and provision of legal updates, support relating to business development opportunities and compliance work.

REPRESENTATIVE EXPERIENCE

Ian's experience working as a Professional Support Lawyer (“PSL”) encompasses:

  • Research: extensive research into topics across a range of commercial litigation, professional negligence and financial services topics; research into procedural, legislative and common law developments; research into developments relating to legal and regulatory investigations
  • Knowledge management: drafting newsletters and ad hoc updates on procedural, legislative and common law developments; collating and promoting internal know-how
  • Business development: researching and drafting client publications, drafting and editing articles for external publication; editing and reviewing client publications; formulating article ideas, monitoring press and industry coverage of a range of commercial litigation, professional negligence and financial services topics
  • Training: writing, organising and delivering training
  • Client advisory experience including:
    • Advising an Irish financial institution in relation to the negotiation and restructuring of a Loan Agreement providing finance to Egyptian IT companies. Acting for the financial institution in LCIA arbitration proceedings following an Event of Default
    • Acting for an Islamic financial institution in relation to a High Court case on the interpretation of a governing law clause which included a reference to Sharia’ah law
    • Acting for a leading UK developer in relation to the negotiation and settlement of a dispute with a market-leading UK supermarket
    • Advising a major UK public body on its opposition to a share capital reduction and petition of a company with which the public body was in quasi-partnership leading to a mutually satisfactory settlement following a six day hearing in the Companies Court
    • Acting for market-leading London insurance broker on a wide range of in-house commercial matters during a six month secondment, including IP/IT issues, employment matters and negligence claims
    • Advising a leading New York based venture capital fund in relation to claims arising out of the collapse of Parmalat, including advice in relation to rights pursuant to certain intercreditor agreements
    • Acting for the Provisional Liquidators of an Iraqi bank in relation to the impact of UN Sanctions prior to and following the Gulf War in 2004
    • Advising UK and French banks, aviation financiers and lessors in relation to the potential liability of lessors and/or aircraft "owners" for damage to third parties caused by aircraft
    • Advising a leading California-based aviation lessor in relation to an insurance claim for hail damage
