EXPERIENCE

Douglas Williams, FACTL, is the Head of the Fulbright IP Practice in Minnesota. Mr. Williams is a trial lawyer concentrating his practice on trial of intellectual property cases. He has significant experience in jury and bench trials of patent cases in medical devices field, software, bio tech and chemical patents, defense of business method patents, and semiconductor field. He is licensed to practice in Texas, Minnesota, Iowa, and the United States Patent & Trademark Office.

Mr. Williams has 30 years of trial experience and has tried many IP jury cases from coast to coast and border to border in a wide variety of technical disciplines. He has tried over 30 intellectual property cases; more than 20 of which were patent cases. Mr. Williams’ trial experience is current; since 2000, he has taken 8 IP cases to trial with a success record of 7-1. Notably, in a series of chemical patent cases, he obtained over a dozen judgments and permanent injunctions protecting a patented product with sales in excess of a billion dollars.

He has appeared in court in nearly half of the states of the United States. where he has argued hundreds of Markman hearings, dispositive motions, procedural motions and discovery motions of all kinds. He has advocated on behalf of both defendants and plaintiffs. Over his entire career as a trial attorney, Mr. Williams has litigated more than 200 IP cases and has examined more than 1000 witnesses at deposition and at trial.

Mr. Williams was inducted as a Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers in 2004. Membership in the College is limited to 1% of the practicing bar and is by recommendation and requires a substantial number of cases tried to verdict. He is one of a very few fellows in the College who is also a registered patent attorney.

As an undergraduate, Doug was research assistant to Dr. James A. Van Allen, Head of the Department of Physics. While in law school, Doug was a member of the Law Review and Student Bar Association Representative. He was admitted to practice in Texas and Iowa in 1974 and in Minnesota in 1975. He was admitted to the United States Patent and Trademark Office in 1973.
