EXPERIENCE

Colleen Cockrum joined the Houston office of Fulbright & Jaworski L.L.P. in 2007. As an associate, she works with the firm's Labor & Employment Law practice.

Colleen represents employers in federal and state court, arbitration and before administrative agencies such as the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC), and the Department of Labor (DOL). She also represents management in civil rights litigation, including race, gender, national origin, disability, equal pay, harassment and retaliation claims, as well as in wrongful discharge, employment tort, state and federal overtime actions, Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), and other employment-related litigation. Her litigation practice includes disputes involving employment contracts.

Colleen also advises clients on labor and employment issues such as wage and hour law (FLSA), the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA), and a variety of other labor matters, including termination issues. Finally, she performs supervisory training seminars, prepares and reviews personnel handbooks and policies, and reviews employment agreements.

As a volunteer assistant city prosecutor, Colleen tried numerous cases to a jury and handled various other bench trials and hearings.

Prior to working at Fulbright, Colleen served as a law clerk to Judge David Hittner of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas. During her clerkship, she assisted Judge Hittner during a visiting assignment in the Southern District of New York.

REPRESENTATIVE EXPERIENCE
  • Assisted in representation of a health care client in race and national origin discrimination and FMLA retaliation, resulting in favorable outcome at trial
  • Represented a health care client in race discrimination and retaliation suit, resulting in summary judgment for the client
  • Aided in representation of a construction client in an overtime suit, resulting in summary judgment for the client
  • Assisted in representation of a high-tech company, obtaining early dismissal of a race and national origin discrimination and retaliation suit
  • Assisted in representation of a manufacturing client regarding willful and serious violations of OSHA
  • Assisted in representation of health care client regarding national origin and sex discrimination claims
  • Aided in representation of insurance client regarding breach of contract claims
  • Assisted in representation of a health care client regarding breach of contract claims
  • Aided in representation of an oil and gas client regarding FLSA overtime claims
  • Negotiated favorable settlement in a contested family law divorce as part of the Houston Volunteer Lawyers Program
  • Advised oil and gas client regarding various FLSA issues
  • Advised health care client regarding ADA accommodation issues
  • Advised industrial client regarding the collective bargaining issues

Prior to law school, Colleen worked as a newspaper reporter. During law school, Colleen was a member of the Houston Law Review and was admitted to the Order of the Coif and Order of the Barons. She received the University of Houston Law Center's ALI-ABA Scholarship and Leadership Award as well as its Distinguished Service Award.

Colleen is admitted to practice law in Texas as well as admitted to the Southern, Eastern and Western Districts of Texas.
